Texas mom arrested after 2 children die in hot vehicle during 'lesson'”

Cynthia Randolph was jailed Friday on two counts of causing serious bodily harm to a child.

A Texas mother faces first-degree felony charges in the deaths of her 2-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son after police say she locked them inside a sweltering vehicle last month to teach them a lesson.

She then told officers that she had to break a window and rescue the children, then called 911, authorities said. After several story changes, police learned she locked them in the vehicle to teach them a lesson because her daughter Juliet didn't obey her and wouldn't get out of the auto when asked.

No bond has been set yet in her case. The temperature was close to 96 Fahrenheit (36 Celsius) and emergency personnel that Randolph had called pronounced the children dead at the scene, the court filing said.

Randolph told police she sent more than half an hour looking for her kids and later found them locked inside her vehicle.

Over the past two decades, more than 700 children have died of heatstroke while in hot cars, said Jan Null, a meteorologist who compiles and keeps track of the data on She was booked into the Parker County Jail.

When the deputies initially spoke to Randolph, she told them she was busy folding laundry and watching television and they were playing in the enclosed back porch when she saw they had disappeared.

Parker County Sheriff's Department investigators arrested Cynthia Randolph after admitting that she left her kids in the auto to "teach them a lesson".

Randolph told investigators that she then went back into her home, smoked marijuana and slept for two to three hours. "No more than an hour", she immediately said.

A ruling on the cause and manner of death in each child is pending, according to the medical examiner's website.

But she changed her story over the course of several police interviews, finally admitting on Saturday (local time) she left them in the vehicle intentionally.

Sheriff Fowler originally said on May 26, that any incidents involving any child are hard ones, but this call was especially heartbreaking with the unfortunate deaths of the two children.
