Ralph Northam wins Democratic nomination for governor”

Virginia is one of only two states electing new governors this year, and the contest could serve as a preview to 2018's midterm elections.

Campaigning with him over the weekend were Virginia's three biggest-name Democrats - Governor Terry McAuliffe and U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, Hillary Clinton's running mate who right away invoked the president. Historically considered a referendum on the president's first year in office, the Commonwealth's elections are even more prominent following the dominating role Trump has played in American political discourse leading up to and through his election.

The governor's race in Virginia, a swing state where a recent Washington Post and George Mason University poll showed 59 percent of voters disapprove of Trump's performance, is shaping up as a pivotal battleground with national implications.

A variety of Virginia politicos to whom CNN spoke peg the magic number at 375,000 voters - above that number could be good for Perriello, but below that should indicate a Northam win.

In the Republican gubernatorial primary, Gillespie faces Prince William County Board of Supervisors Chair Corey Stewart and state Sen. As the mother of three young children, I know that if Tom is elected governor, he will live up to his promise of making Virginia a more inclusive state that provides children of all races and backgrounds equal opportunity to succeed.

Nearly every profile of the Perriello-Northam race cast the former as the progressive, populist outsider insurgent and the latter as the moderate, centrist creature of the establishment.

Gillespie, a political strategist and former chair of the Republican National Committee, emerged the victor with just over a percentage point. "Besides", Mrs. Stanley is said to have crisply told Byrd, "it's Tom's turn!"

"All I am going to do is put forward ideas that will get Virginia going again", Gillespie said. He has endorsements from Senators Sanders and Elizabeth Warren in his pocket and has filled his campaign's pocketbook off their supporters. Most polls showed Gillespie with a double-digit lead before Election Day. Both state House and Senate caucuses pledged their support just ahead of Perriello's announcement.

Northam, a well-liked pediatric neurologist, had a head start on the trail and in money raised.

The 57-year-old Northam has stuck to the more traditional way of campaigning, emphasizing the deep support he enjoys from every statewide Democratic official and state legislator.

As Perriello continued to campaign through the state, Northam spent the last days before the primary with Virginia's Democratic all-stars in northern Virginia, Richmond and Hampton Roads - the densely populated "urban crescent" areas that will probably decide the primary.

Perriello has apologized for an anti-abortion amendment he voted for in Congress, and has distanced himself from his past praise of the National Rifle Association.

Northam won the Democratic nomination, defeating an insurgent challenger backed by U.S. Sens. Mark Warner in 2014.

On the Republican side, Stewart has tried to make his support of Trump a top issue while Gillespie, a former Republican National Committee chairman, has largely tried to keep Trump at arm's length.

Gillespie, a moderate GOP insider, aims to make a modest cut to income tax.

Stewart has run a controversial campaign, pledging to fight the removal of Virginia's Confederate memorials and to crackdown on illegal immigration, and pledging his loyalty to Trump and his policies.

Wagner, meanwhile, has touted his experience as a veteran lawmaker who can fix the state's congested highways.

"Really important part of our democracy to participate in elections, even primary elections", said voter Mable Kinzie.
