After launch, the NASA sounding rocket released artificial clouds that scientists can use to track the movement of Earth's ionosphere.

NASA launched a rocket early Thursday morning, resulting in colorful clouds spreading over the East Coast-from NY to North Carolina.

Completed at 4:25 a.m. from the Wallops location on Chincoteague Island, Va., NASA successfully launched its Terrier-Improved Malemute sounding rocket - after 11 recent unsuccessful attempts.

"The vapour tracers are formed through the interaction of barium, strontium and cupric-oxide", Nasa said ahead of the launch.

'The wait is over!' NASA Wallops tweeted.

The launch of the Terrier-Improved Malemute two-stage sounding rocket had been repeatedly rescheduled, but the rocket finally got its chance at 4:25 a.m. EDT (0825 GMT) today (June 29). The agency is calling it "an early Independence Day fireworks display". It flew to an altitude of about 118 miles (190 kilometers), according to a statement, and let loose 10 soda-can-sized canisters that then deployed the blue-green and red vapors, creating the artificial clouds captured in the video above.

NASA's artificial clouds lit up the skies, as seen in this photo from Stone Harbor, New Jersey.

'The development of the multi-canister or ampule ejection system will allow scientists to gather information over a much larger area than previously allowed when deploying the vapour just from the main payload'.

The launch delays started on May 31, with the last attempt, on June 24, foiled by extensive cloud cover.

The Terrier-Improved Malemute launches from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.
