To Many Americans, Memorial Day Has Lost Its Meaning

In 2018, Memorial Day will fall on May 28. Hats from each branch of the military were displayed at the fallen comrade table.

Standing on the front lawn of Brown-Bishop Post No. 704, Veterans of Foreign Wars, 105 Main St., a crowd watched as a line of weathered men in sparkling white military uniforms solemnly discharged rifles into the balmy May air. Instead, veterans say, the holiday should be moved to a specific date in an effort to return to a solemn day of remembrance. Join with us in remembering with great respect those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. To those not serving, he wished for them to be safe and enjoy a day of freedom that was provided by those who fight for our country.

At 7 a.m., the American Legion's Barton-Hood Post 500, located at 322 Main St.in Abernathy, will begin offering a breakfast that continues until 10 a.m., and flags will also be placed on veterans' graves in the cemetery. James E. Wright explains the terms "monument" and "memorial" are sometimes used interchangeably to describe the many locations across the United States which honor the fallen.

Caroline Janney talks about the origins of Memorial Day and how the meaning has morphed over the decades.

"It hurts", Duffy said.

"The country has grown so that it separates the warrior from the war, and I feel that was a real plus; what we had to go through was an eye opener for everybody, so that all changed for the good, and I'm grateful for that". Radical jihadis and terrorists stalking us from the shadows hate the American Left as much as they hate the American Right.

The flags will remain at the veterans' graves until Veterans Day.

"One of our focuses is to make sure the community knows about patriotism and ancestry, and this is one of the best ways to honor veterans and make people understand that we're all here because of them", Hedges said. Each year, we set aside a day to honor those who gave their lives to protect our freedom.

For some families who've lost loved ones who served, Memorial Day can be everyday. Memorial Day was always a day for traveling to the cemeteries, cleaning up the grave sites, and placing the flags for all of those who had passed. Wright says while memorials are indeed a source of remembrance, monuments "seek to celebrate the goal, the accomplishments, the heroic".

It's easy to get caught up in Memorial Day being about a three-day weekend and stores having big sales, but Memorial Day is a day when we remember and honor the courageous men and women who've given their lives in service of the United States through their participation in our nation's military. "We give them an article of the constitution, and that's one of the programs that's kind of fallen away, and we're trying to revitalize that again", Patnode said.
