Police officer shot during active shooter situation in Licking County”

Three others were reportedly found dead and officials say they believe one of them was the shooter.

Authorities say a gunman has fatally shot the police chief of an OH village and two nursing home employees.

Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said the suspected shooter is from Utica.

The gunman, who was not immediately identified, shot two other people before turning the gun on himself, WBNS-TV reported.

The police chief killed is a father of five with a sixth child on the way. For a shooter to get into the locked facility, Casto says a person would need someone to let them in or have access to the code.

The nursing home's residents have been transferred to local hospitals, WOSU reported, and Kirkersville Elementary School was placed on lockdown in response to the shooting.

Reports of the shooting at the Pine Kirk Care Center in Kirkersville came around 7:30 a.m.

The village is about 25 miles east of Columbus.

Kirkersville Police Chief Steven Eric Disario, 36, died, and two nursing home workers were also found dead, Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorp confirmed.

A woman who works about a block from where an OH police chief and two nursing home employees were killed says she heard gunshots followed by screaming and then sirens.

Thorp said he could not recall the last time a law enforcement officer was killed in the line of duty in Licking County. A heavy police presence is still located at the school. Sims, who started working at Pine Kirk as a high school junior six years ago, said she thought, "I just gotta keep people in this room safe and keep this door closed".

Parents can pick up students at Watkins Middle School.

In a tweet, Governor John Kasich said he was "shocked & pained by the horrific shooting in Kirkersville".
