MSNBC weekly ratings beat Fox News, CNN for first time ever”

But last week, MSNBC climbed to first in total weekday viewers with 2.44 million in prime time, compared with Fox's 2.41 million, and continued to lead in the younger demographic.

Basically, the ongoing and ever-expanding list of scandals involving the Trump administration - many revolving around Russian Federation - has depressed Fox News viewers while simultaneously spiking interest at CNN and MSNBC, driving Fox into the ratings basement.

The NBA playoffs made TNT the week's most popular cable network.

Flagship shows such as CNN's Anderson Cooper 360 and MSNBC's The Rachel Maddow Show performed particularly well, while Fox has seemingly struggled with the loss of Bill O'Reilly's The O'Reilly Factor, which had consistently led all cable news programs in the ratings for the better part of two decades. If and when the news cycle calms down, we may get a clearer answer on that, but for one week at least, it's Fox and not MSNBC that has to wonder whether it needs more changes in its prime time. Its primetime lineup is virtually unrecognizable from the one that finished 2016 (the biggest year in cable news history) on top.

Fox News' primetime ratings continue to tumble after the departure of longtime host Bill O'Reilly.

The cable news order is out of whack.

Fewer viewers are coming to Fox News in the 9 p.m. hour for "The Five", a loose conversation about the day's events with a happy hour atmosphere designed for the 5 p.m. The attack outside of an Ariana Grande concert, where 22 people were killed, dominated cable news coverage across all three major channels. (That's in the demo and total viewers.) But with CNN and MSNBC on its heels in different dayparts, this last week will prove to be make-or-break for all parties. Fox's tone during those years was arguably less pro-Bush then than it is pro-Trump now, especially during the second term as conservatives grew more frustrated with the administration, which might hold some lessons for Fox now.

MSNBC and CNN have been trying to find the chink in Fox News' ratings armor for years, and it looks like they have finally found it.

At 9 p.m., Fox News Channel's "The Five" was absolutely demolished by Cooper and MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show", which won the key demographic by more than 200,000 viewers. Fox News, meanwhile, finished in third place in that category for the first time since June 2000.
