Man Dressed As Punisher Brings Real Guns, Prompting Comicon Prop Ban

Man Dressed As Punisher Brings Real Guns, Prompting Comicon Prop Ban”

The judge set 31-year-old Mathew Sterling's bail at $1 million and he is facing charges of attempted murder, three counts of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, carrying a weapon in a prohibited place, and wearing body armor during the commission of a felony, according to the Phoenix police.

According to police, the man also made threats against authorities on social media prior to the incident.

The entertainment and comic convention began on Thursday.

The man was wearing all black at the time of the incident but police couldn't determine if he was dressed in a costume.

"That person knew that those posts could be credible and immediately alerted law enforcement and prevented a tragedy".

While the news of the arrest at the Phoenix Comicon is disturbing, the police have stated that there is no further evidence to suggest the man was working as a part of a team. Check out the comments on the Phoenix Comicon statement above if you don't believe me. Weapons check can be a pretty perfunctory thing at a lot of comic cons, but I'm guessing that after this, security will be ramped up.

Sterling allegedly told police he was the Punisher, and that the firearms were for "self defense in case officers gave him trouble and that he would shoot to kill". Security staff at the Phoenix Comicon are supposed to inspect prop weapons, as a matter of course, but in this case, Phoenix police said that did not happen. Should convention and event attendees in the United States be concerned that they might be next?

The restricted entrances to the show are expected to cause long lines for an event that was already drawing 100,000 people. More police will also be present during the event to help keep things in order.

As we've previously reported, organizers have also increased security measures, including bag searches, at the convention center.

Phoenix Comicon runs Thursday through to Sunday, May 25-28, 2017 at 100 N. Third Street, Phoenix AZ 85004.
