Jeter's No 2 retired by Yanks; Monument Park plaque unveiled”

The New York Yankees honored one of their greatest ever players on Sunday night as Derek Jeter returned to the stadium to see his number retired. They also dedicated a plaque in his honor that will be placed in Monument Park behind center field.

Current Houston Astros DH Carlos Beltran, who played the first of his three seasons with the Yankees in Jeter's final year of 2014, was very close with the Captain, and he got to deliver one of Jeter's gifts, a blazer emblazoned with a Monument Park logo.

Sunday finally became the day Yankee fans had been predicting and expecting since the turn of the century; Derek Jeter taking his rightful place in amongst the Yankee legends in Monument Park.

On the infield grass, the Yankees unveiled the plaque for Derek Sanderson Jeter, with broadcaster Michael Kay listing off his many accomplishments - the 3,465 hits, the 14 All-Star Games, the five World Series rings.

The Yankee stadium serenaded Jeter with cheers and Frank Sinatra's "My Way" as he walked onto the field with his wife Hannah Davis, who is now pregnant with their first child.

Former teammates Mariano Rivera, Paul ONeill, Tino Martinez, David Cone and Hideki Matsui also were on hand. "You don't come up requesting numbers when you're 20 years old, so I took what they gave me".

"When I was younger, with Atlanta, I got a chance to play against him in Yankee Stadium, and that was awesome", McCann said.

Masahiro Tanaka (5-1) was to start the second game for the Yankees and Charlie Morton (4-2) for the Astros.

"Everything happened so quickly", Jeter said. "It's a moment I'll never forget".

Prior to tonight's game against the Houston Astros, the Yankees retired Jeter's jersey, joining the likes of Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle, and Babe Ruth.

Jeter was referring to a premature report by Bloomberg that stated the group he led along with former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush had already won the auction to negotiate the purchase of the Marlins. "I always think Derek is going to successful at whatever he does". We went out there day in and day out trying to win, trying to do anything to help the team and more importantly trying to keep our jobs.”.
