Gunman Shot Dead After 21 Hour Siege

Gunman Shot Dead After 21 Hour Siege”

Monday's line of duty death of Senior Constable Brett Forte in the Lockyer Valley region, west of Brisbane near Toowoomba, during a traffic stop marks the first line of duty death in Australia in 2017.

One officer died in 2016 in a vehicle crash according to their police memorial.

Mr Forte was shot after intercepting a man police described as "wanted" about 14:20 local time (04:20 GMT) on Monday. "The male person has been shot and [he] has been declared deceased at the scene".

Maddison allegedly opened fire at Forte, his partner also sustained injuries while trying to escape the bullets, losing control of their patrol auto which caused it to roll.

On Monday, Queensland Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said his officers wanted to resolve the siege "as peacefully as humanly possible".

Other police officers at the scene of the shooting had been able to extract Senior Constable Forte and themselves.

On behalf of the police family I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Senior Constable Brett Forte.

POLICE are still hunting for the person suspected of killing a police officer in the Lockyer Valley this afternoon.

"He has been challenged by police at that point in time - he has fired at those police", he told reporters on Tuesday.

Police say they now have him "contained" on a property in Gatton.

The respected policeman served with the Queensland Police Service for more than 15 years and was part of Toowoomba's Tactical Crime Squad.

"Every day, the courageous officers of the Queensland Police Service put their lives on the line when they go to work", she said in a statement.

Police are continuing to search for the armed man who fled the vehicle into nearby bushland.

Police have locked down a large area and set up an exclusion zone where the man, or gunmen, are believed to still be.

"It is so distressing - not just to the police service - but to the community, that we have lost a fine police officer", Mr Stewart said.
