Branstad confirmed as new China ambassador”

While Branstad highlights Iowa's low unemployment rate of 3.1 percent and renewable energy investments in wind farms and ethanol as signs of success, critics point to legislation Branstad signed this year that weakened public unions, restricted minimum hourly wage increases and added a voter identification requirement.

Reynolds, a married mother and grandmother, will serve as governor through January 2019, when Branstad's sixth non-consecutive term would have ended.

I'd like to thank Governor Branstad for his decades of public service to the people of Iowa and congratulate him on his appointment as Ambassador to China.

"I will have the opportunity to share my news about the lieutenant governor process", Reynolds said.

10 a.m.: Gov. Terry Branstad will resign as governor and immediately be sworn in as U.S. ambassador to the People's Republic of China by Judge Steven Colloton of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit in the governor's formal office at the Iowa Capitol Building. At the top of that list are actionable items on regaining market access for USA beef no later than July 16 after a long hiatus following market closures due to bovine spongiform encephalopathy. "While we sincerely hope Governor Reynolds is able to succeed in addressing these challenges, Iowans can not ignore her role in creating them in the first place".

She spoke of literally breaking down walls as Clarke County treasurer; she said she and her husband remodeled the office by ripping out a wall that divided employees. "Her experience tackling those tough issues and also her passion to improve the lives of Iowans gives me such confidence that with Kim Reynolds leading our state, Iowa's best days lie ahead".

Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds became Iowa's first woman Governor, replacing Terry Branstad.

He said Lt. Gov. Reynolds has his full support now and in the future. "Kim Reynolds can't run from her record". She wants to stress science, technology, engineering and math education in K-12 schools and expand workforce training for adults.

"It has been a great honor to serve", Branstad said as he ended his 22-plus years as governor at a Statehouse ceremony this morning. Senate Democratic Leader Rob Hogg said he is eager to see whether Reynolds does things differently.

A short time later, Chief Justice Mark Cady will administer the oath of office to Reynolds, who will make her first speech as governor.
