'Avocado Hand' Injuries Prompt Doctors to Urge Caution When Slicing”

Dubbed the "avocado hand", the injury occurs when people stab or slash themselves with a knife while trying to pierce through the fruit's hard skin.

Improper use of kitchen knives to cut the outer casing of avocados has resulted in a new terrifying condition called "avocado hand" - whereby brunch-lovers accidentally jab themselves in the hand while attempting to prepare the tricky fruit.

"Recently the health benefits of avocado have been advocated, with an increase in their popularity - and a consequent increase in related injuries", David Shewring, vice-president of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand, told The Times. "I've definitely seen an increase in the number of injuries to the hand from slicing avocados".

Don't put the avocado in your hand! In some instances, the injury has led to serious nerve damage.

Avocado-related injuries are becoming so widespread that The Times of London reported on the uptick in avocado hand. The avocado is either not ripe enough, or your knife is boring.

We like the way you think, Eccles. The fleshy fruit rich in healthy fats is more popular than ever, but in addition to surging prices, avocado fans may have one more thing to worry about. Then, place the fruit on the counter top and - hands away - use the knife to tap the stone and lift it out.

We're pretty confident in our avocado-handling skills at this point, being self-professed experts at prepping avocado toast, stuffed avocado, avocado margaritas (yep, you read that right), and nearly every other avocado-based recipe. Depending on how deep the knife lodges in the pit, you will want to be extra careful when pulling the pit from the knife.

Plus, you don't have to deal with the devastation of having a perfectly good avocado go brown in the fridge. Carefully, but forcefully land the blade in the center of the pit, and twist the fruit to remove.
