Australia considering North Atlantic Treaty Organisation request to send more troops to Afghanistan

Australia considering North Atlantic Treaty Organisation request to send more troops to Afghanistan”

MOSCOW-NATO has received a request from its military authorities to increase its military presence in Afghanistan with a few thousand troops, and is assessing it, a decision is expected in coming weeks, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Wednesday.

American forces have two missions in Afghanistan: training and advising Afghan troops in conjunction with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces and carrying out counterterrorism operations.

The US State Department recommended earlier this month that 3,000 to 5,000 additional troopers be sent to Afghanistan. "We're open to that", Turnbull told the media.

USA officials said the administration's developing policy would focus less on the worldwide troop numbers needed and more on providing resources for increased Afghan air power and special forces.

The Pentagon's intelligence chief says the work of US and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces to stabilize Afghanistan is at risk of being squandered.

"We are certainly open to increasing our work there, but we've obviously got to look at the commitments of the ADF in other parts of the region and indeed in other parts of the world", he told reporters in Sydney today.

He met with US Defense Secretary James Mattis as well as North Atlantic Treaty Organisation officials in Kabul.

And how does the new approach address the problem of the Russians and Iranians, who, by some reporting, are involved in Afghanistan, including allegedly backing our main adversary, the Taliban?

The Taliban, which first emerged in the mid-1990s in southern Afghanistan, managed to conquer most of the country before its 2001 ouster, with the help of a range of foreign jihadists, including Pakistanis, Saudis and Chechens.

As the administration of President Donald Trump weighs sending more troops to Afghanistan, the 16-year war grinds on in bloody stalemate. "I think we'd probably want to do it".

There are 13,300 troops in the overall worldwide force, including 8,400 Americans.

"I strongly believe that the best answer we have to terrorism, the best weapon against terrorism, is to train local forces to fight terrorism, to stabilize their own country", Stoltenberg said.

The strategy proposal reflects calls from Army Gen. John Nicholson, the top USA commander in Afghanistan, who told Congress in February that he faced a shortfall of "a few thousand" troops amid a military stalemate.

Australian army trainers have been instructing Afghan soldiers as part of a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation mission.

"What we promised was to stop the cuts, gradually increase and then move towards 2 percent", Stoltenberg said.
