Air Canada to Launch its Own Loyalty Program in 2020

Air Canada to Launch its Own Loyalty Program in 2020”

Before the new Air Canada program launches in June 2020, members will be able to earn and redeem Aeroplan Miles for Aeroplan Rewards, including flights with Air Canada and our Star Alliance partners in accordance with the Aeroplan program. Aeroplan members can continue to earn and redeem Aeroplan Miles for Aeroplan Rewards, including flights with Air Canada and their Star Alliance Partners until June 2020.

When an Aeroplan member member makes an award booking for flights, Aimia pays Air Canada, an arrangement that makes Aeroplan, "Air Canada's largest single customer and generates significant cash flows to Air Canada", Aimia told investors recently.

Air Canada said it would launch its own loyalty program in 2020, replacing the current program, Aeroplan, sending its shares to their highest in almost 10 years.

The Montreal-based airline said Aeroplan members can continue to earn and redeem miles until June 29, 2020, which is when Air Canada's agreement with Aimia - which owns and runs Aeroplan - expires. Air Canada's stock rose 8.5 per cent to $16.16. They can book air travel on Air Canada, and all airlines in the Star Alliance.

"Doing the right thing for Air Canada's customers throughout this transition period will be our guiding principle", Calin Rovinescu, the airline's president and CEO, said in a statement. All Million Mile program qualification activity and status will also be honoured in the new program.

Aeroplan was originally launched as Air Canada's in-house loyalty program in 1984, before it was spun off into a separate company and sold a decade-and-a-half ago. By operating its own loyalty program, Air Canada will be better able to strengthen its customer relationships and deliver a more consistent end-to-end customer experience.

Air Canada is Canada's largest domestic and worldwide airline serving more than 200 airports on six continents.

Does this change anything about my Aeroplan credit card?

I've booked an Air Canada flight using Aeroplan points.

The relationship has been confusing to customers, with many not understanding Aeroplan is part of a different company than Air Canada.

He said the majority of Aeroplan members earn points not through flying but rather through the dollars they spend shopping while using these affiliated cards. A customer might have an issue with Aeroplan and be frustrated when Air Canada can not solve it. His interim replacement, David Johnston, takes over the role. The airline has not decided what the program will be called, or exactly how it will operate. The program has deals with TD, CIBC, and American Express.
