AG Schimel "thrilled" for Sheriff Clarke and new position

AG Schimel

A Trump-supporting Milwaukee sheriff with ties to antigovernment groups may be headed to the Department of Homeland Security. The job is a senior position that involves coordinating outreach to local law enforcement agencies.

CNN's Kate Bolduan tried to attack Sheriff David Clarke Thursday by playing several clips of him saying things that many Americans enthusiastically agree with. "I said from the beginning, after President Trump was elected, if asked to serve I would".

"I can only hope that Gov. Scott Walker appoints someone who is committed to the public safety of all Milwaukee County residents and will put their job to the people of the county ahead of politics and self-promotion because Milwaukee County certainly deserves better than the likes of Sheriff Clarke".

As violence roiled Milwaukee in August, Clarke took to Twitter chiding the left and black activists, whom he derided as "Black Lies Matter". Clarke said he hopes whoever fills the remaining year-and-a-half of his term will keep his policies and goals in place.

Now the controversial lawman is back in the news, telling WISN radio he has accepted a position in the Trump administration as an assistant secretary in the Department of Homeland Security.

Though not a member of the militia, Clarke is sympathetic to their movement and in 2016, Clarke accepted a "Leadership Award" from the ny chapter of the Oath Keepers. He called protests that turned violent "black cultural dysfunction". Despite the fact that he is a registered Democrat, Sheriff David Clarke has been vocal in his criticism of traditionally liberal issues, including abortion, the Black Lives Matter movement, civil rights, and gun control. Seven jail staffers could face criminal charges after the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office outlined a case for the jury suggesting that disobedient inmates were routinely deprived of water as punishment and pleas for help were ignored. Most recently, corrections officers were blamed for the dehydration death of Terrill Thomas.

Clarke leaves Wisconsin amid calls for his resignation after an inquiry recommended felony charges in an inmate's death by dehydration in one of his jails a year ago. No Republican challenged Clarke for the office, and he enjoyed conservative support. "This appointment is a disgrace".
