Families prepare to receive the dead from Colombia plane crash”

Three of the survivors of the plane crash in Colombia which killed 71 people on Tuesday, including the vast majority of members from Brazilian football team Chapecoense, have finally received some better news as they recover in hospital.

Roberto Di Marchi came to Colombia to escort the body of his cousin Nilson Folle Junior, 29, a director of Chapecoense, back home.

A recording of conversations between a pilot of the doomed flight and air traffic controllers, as well as the account of a surviving flight attendant, indicated the plane ran out of fuel before crashing just a few miles from Medellin's worldwide airport.

While the experts worked, thousands of white-clad supporters of Medellin's Atletico Nacional club jammed the stands of the 40,000-seat stadium where the team had been scheduled to play a Copa Sudamericana finals match against Brazil's ill-fated Chapecoense.

Two members of the Bolivian flight crew, Ximena Suarez and Erwin Tumiri, were bruised but not in critical condition, while journalist Rafael Valmorbida was treated in intensive care for multiple rib fractures that partly collapsed a lung. "30 teams", said Copetti.

"I doubt that a bigger club would have done the same", he added. "They've just operated on his legs and the doctors have assured that he will be able to return playing football".

In a leaked tape, the pilot, Miguel Quiroga, can be heard warning of a "total electric failure" and "lack of fuel". Chavez said the airline made a decision to go ahead with the flight anyway and air traffic controllers had no authority to prevent them.

On the approach to Medellin, the pilot had initially sought permission to land urgently but another plane was given priority because it had suffered a fuel leak.

Authorities set up a hot line for people to report missing friends and relatives, and after following up on dozens of leads, they said many of those people had been accounted for.

Global flight regulations require aircraft to carry enough reserve fuel to fly for 30 minutes after reaching their destination.

An airport official raised the concern after checking the plane's flight plan, Bolivia's Deber newspaper said.

Bolivia's aviation authority suspended the operating licence of charter airline LaMia, which was part-owned by the pilot and two other aviation officials.

LAMIA Chief Executive Officer Gustavo Vargas on Wednesday said the plane had been correctly inspected before departure and should have had enough fuel for about 4-1/2 hours. The pilot had reportedly missed a refuelling stop at Cobija.
