Obama says he and Trump had 'excellent conversation'

President Barack Obama meets with President-elect Donald Trump at the White House on November 10, 2016.

The relaxed, cordial demeanour between Obama and Trump in front of the cameras was in stark contrast to the months of harsh rhetoric that came from both during a bitter election campaign.

"This was a meeting that was going to last for maybe 10 or 15 minutes", Mr Trump said.

After taking office, Trump will enjoy Republican majorities in both chambers of the U.S. Congress that could help him implement his legislative agenda and scrap or roll back Obama policies that he dislikes, such as the "Obamacare" healthcare law, the nuclear deal with Iran and U.S. participation in the Paris agreement to fight global warming.

Trump spent Wednesday focusing on that transition during meetings with his staff at Trump Tower in NY.

The visits come after post-election protests erupted in Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, and several other cities across the country on Wednesday night, including New York City, where the Trump family now live.

President Obama said he and successor-in-waiting Donald Trump had an "excellent conversation" Thursday as the intense rivals who largely defined the volatile 2016 election discussed the hand-off of the White House. The vice president-elect, Mike Pence, also attended the session with Ryan, who, like Obama, has had his share of differences with Trump.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest also addressed the meeting between the President and the President-elect with reporters, where he stressed that the conversation focused largely on a "smooth and peaceful transition".

And I look forward to being with you many, many more times in the future.

Obama also showed Trump the Truman balcony on the second floor of the White House residence, which overlooks the South Lawn and Washington Monument.

DONALD TRUMP: Whether it's health care or immigration, so many different things, we will be working on them very rapidly. On Wednesday evening, Trump aides said they would not bring the press corps to Washington with the president-elect for his meeting with Obama, breaking long-standing protocol.

Calling Obama a "very good man" Trump, said that he would be seeking his advice in future.

Team Trump unveiled a transition website - - that highlights the colossal human resources challenge facing the incoming administration under the headline "Help wanted: 4,000 presidential appointees".

The connection between the two wives began before they got to know each other when Melania plagiarised a part of Michelle's speech during the Republican National Convention in July.

"We're going to look very strongly at health care, and we're looking at jobs - big league jobs". Obama, meanwhile, had mocked Trump on the campaign trail.

Mr Obama said his talks with the billionaire political novice, held barely 36 hours after his upset election victory over the Democrat Hillary Clinton, were "wide-ranging".

Protesters turned out for a second day in cities across America from NY to Los Angeles to express continued opposition to the incoming leader they accuse of racism, sexism and xenophobia.
