Inside, Trump offered some Republicans what they wanted to hear.

Price said rank-and-file Republicans were receptive.

"You know, you know it is sometimes hard", said Kasich.

After the meeting, Flake allegedly told reporters, "I want to support the nominee".

This week alone, Ryan has been prompted to publicly respond to Trump's praise for Saddam Hussein by clarifying the Iraqi strongman was "evil", and also said the NY billionaire's campaign must "clean up" its social media operation on the heels of a tweet with an apparently anti-Semitic image.

After meeting with House Republicans, Trump held what's being described by some as a contentious get-together with some Senate Republicans.

Many Republicans remain unenthusiastic about Mr. Trump less than two weeks before the Republican Party convention begins on July 18.

Trump also huddled with House and Senate Republicans - including former primary rival Ted Cruz - Thursday as he seeks to unite Republicans behind his candidacy at time when his campaign is again clouded by controversy.

It came on the heels of a fiery Trump speech Wednesday night in which he defended his retweet of the image of a six-pointed star alongside a picture of Clinton on a field of hundred-dollar bills. Trump argues the star in his tweet was a regular star that a sheriff might use.

"Characterizing Kirk as a loser, Trump vowed that he would carry IL in the general election even though the state traditionally has been solidly Democratic in presidential contests".

Trump supporters who were present said they welcomed the reassurance.

Iowa Rep. Rod Blum, ranked No. 1on Roll Call's list of the most vulnerable House incumbents, said Trump had a good message on jobs and economy to help him carry his Iowa distinct. She was taking part in Senate Armed Services committee hearing.

Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida said he needed to check his calendar. Knight endorsed Trump, saying he was "the most prepared man in history" to be president.

There are, however, 27 amendments, which was enough for Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-VA), who told the Post that while Trump's ignorance left him "uncomfortable", he assumed that Trump just got articles and amendments mixed up: "When he made the comment about the Constitution, I love this Article and that Article, I assumed he was talking about the Amendments, because he was off on the numbers". Still others came out of the meeting praising him.

This was a week when Republicans believed they'd been handed a gift - a chance for Trump to capitalize on the stunning denunciation of Clinton's carelessness in her email practices as secretary of state by FBI Director James Comey.

Democrats are moving to find political advantage from Trump's appearance. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee released a pair of ads linking Republican lawmakers to Trump.

The second ad asks viewers, "If your Republican representative supports Trump, should they be representing you?" According to a news release, they will talk about building a stronger America and stress why "Donald Trump's divisive agenda would be unsafe for America".
